Support Your Customers’ Digital Transformation with Effective Assessment Tools

The Internet connects our planet in ways many never imagined possible. Humans on other continents are essentially our neighbors, sharing information with a click of a button. Collaboration with a stranger in a different time zone is instantaneous. This effortless level of communication has fostered an increasingly laid-back approach to Internet usage and information sharing, as companies evolve to a state where practically all transactions, communications, and data are facilitated by network activity. This is in addition to the trend toward hosted services, which are accommodated via connectivity in the cloud. The media refers to this as the market’s “Digital Transformation.”

Workers have let their collective guard down amid this new culture of digital collaboration, accepting the fluidity of data transfer as status quo. Although this is a fantastic development when it comes to ease-of-doing-business, it creates an atmosphere that is more vulnerable to data breaches through internal network compromise. As a recent article in the Harvard Business Review acknowledges, internal cybersecurity issues are frequently the point-of-origin for breaches. Research confirms the scope of the risk:  The 2017 Official Annual Cybercrime Report from global information security advisory firm Herjavec Group predicts the cost of damages from cybercrime will exceed $6 trillion a year by 2021.

“Data breaches might feel like a fact of modern life, but they are an artifact of modern indifference,” noted venture capitalist Lucy P. Marcus, founder and CEO of Marcus Venture Consulting, Ltd. “Companies, regardless of size or sector, need to recognize their responsibility, inescapable in today’s technology-based economy, to be supremely vigilant and proactive about securing their data and systems.”

As much as this trend toward ubiquitous collaboration, hosted services, and digital transformation will drive commerce and globalization, the burden falls to managed services and IT solution providers to make sure these networks are secured from cyber-based breaches. Microsoft executives Patti Chrzan, senior director of strategic programs of Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU), and Herb Quinde, public sector director of its US Dynamics Industry Group, recently gave a presentation at The University of North Georgia on cybersecurity trends. “Cybercrime has become increasingly sophisticated,” acknowledged Chrzan. “We have seen a shift from individual actors to organized, destructive attacks by crime syndicates and nation states.”

Quinde explained how his company, and to an extent the marketplace at large, responds to such developments. “We act on the intelligence that comes from oursecurity-related signals and insights, including those from our DCU (Digital Crimes Unit) operations, and foster a vibrant ecosystem of partners who help us raise the bar across the industry, helping to securely enable our customers’ digital transformations.” As a trusted IT advisor to your clientele, you have a responsibility to be such a partner, supporting your business customers’ transformations by delivering diligent cyber security.

Strategies could include prioritizing your customer’s security from the network endpoint outward, to gain a holistic perspective of that network and the risks at hand.
